About Us

About Us

Northern Overwatch is a Canadian investigative publication dedicated to exposing the truth about cybersecurity, privacy, surveillance, and digital rights in Canada.
We break down complex incidents, uncover what others overlook, and explain – in clear, human language – how the digital world affects real people.

Technology shapes every part of our lives, yet the systems that control our data remain opaque. Breaches happen. Laws change quietly. Corporations rewrite privacy policies without notice. Government agencies expand their surveillance powers with little public debate. And Canadians are expected to accept it all without question.

Privacy in NOT a crime.

We don’t accept that.
And neither should you.

Our Mission

Northern Overwatch was created to shine a light into the digital shadows of Canada.
Our mission is simple:

Investigate the system

  • Investigate the systems, policies, and decisions that shape digital life in Canada.
  • Explain cybersecurity and privacy issues in plain English—no jargon, no gatekeeping.
  • Expose failures, abuses, and power imbalances wherever they occur.
  • Protect Canadians by giving them knowledge, clarity, and practical guidance.

We believe that privacy is a right, not a privilege.
We believe that encryption is not a crime.
And we believe Canadians deserve transparency, not silence.

Why We Exist

Most cybersecurity reporting tells you what happened – a breach, an attack, a leak, an investigation, a new law.

But almost nobody explains what that actually means for Canadians.

When you hear “LifeLabs was breached,” you aren’t told:

  • What information was stolen
  • What criminals can do with it
  • How long it circulates
  • Who is at risk
  • What steps affected people should take
  • Whether the company acted responsibly

That gap leaves Canadians unprotected.

Northern Overwatch fills that gap with a dedicated section called:

Impact on Canadians

Here, we break down every major cyber incident—clearly, bluntly, honestly.
No corporate spin. No technical confusion.
Just real-world consequences and practical advice for real people.

Because cybersecurity is not about machines
It’s about the people who depend on them.
